Everything you need to know about buying Nordic Walking equipment

Choosing the right equipment can make all the difference to your Nordic Walking experience. Whether you're just getting started or replacing an old pair of poles, this guide explains what to look for, what to avoid and where to get expert advice. British Nordic Walking does not sell poles but follows INWA's advice that it's not Nordic Walking if you use strapless poles.

New to Nordic Walking? Most British Nordic Walking instructors have poles available for beginners to borrow, so there's no need to buy equipment before your first session. Just let your Instructor know your height.

Choosing Nordic Walking poles

Your poles are the most important piece of equipment. Unlike trekking poles, Nordic Walking poles are designed to work with the internationally recognised INWA 10 Step Method, helping you develop an efficient, full-body walking technique.

Look for poles that are:

  • Lightweight and comfortable to swing

  • Fitted with glove-style straps

  • The correct length for your height

For most people, fixed-length poles are lighter, stronger and more comfortable than adjustable poles, although adjustable poles can be useful for travelling or sharing between users.

Need advice? Nordic Walk Store, our long-standing sponsor, stocks a carefully selected range of Nordic Walking poles and accessories, with expert guidance to help you choose the right equipment.

Our British Nordic Walking Instructors are trained to help you find the right length poles and often have a selection of styles to try.

Can I use trekking poles?

Simply put - no. Although they look similar, trekking poles are designed for balance on uneven ground, while Nordic Walking poles are designed to help propel you forwards using the correct technique. Nordic Walking poles have glove-like straps that help you get the full range of motions required for good technique.

Using dedicated Nordic Walking poles makes learning easier and helps you gain the full fitness and posture benefits of Nordic Walking.

What shoes should I wear?

You don't need specialist footwear. Comfortable trainers, walking shoes or trail shoes are suitable for most walks.

Choose shoes that provide good grip and support, and dress in breathable layers appropriate for the weather. A lightweight waterproof jacket is useful for changeable conditions.

Useful accessories

As you walk more regularly, you may wish to add:

  • Replacement rubber paws

  • A small backpack or hydration bottle

  • Walking gloves for colder weather

Common buying mistakes

Avoid these common pitfalls:

  • Buying trekking poles instead of Nordic Walking poles

  • Choosing poles that are the wrong length

  • Assuming expensive equipment is more important than good technique

  • Buying before you've tried a beginner session

Learning the correct technique first will help you choose equipment with confidence.
