Work in the field of Nordic Walking
Nordic walking provides a great opportunity to work in green spaces in the fresh air in rural and urban locations. Our instructors find teaching people to Nordic walk is enjoyable and offers a rewarding lifestyle. Being a Nordic walking instructor can be a full time job or complement an existing career.
Who are Nordic walking instructors?
There are currently more than 1000 INWA qualified Nordic Walking instructors in the UK. They come from a variety of different backgrounds including personal trainers, gym instructors, Pilates teachers, physiotherapists, osteopaths, GP’s, cardiac rehab specialists, community workers, Outward Bound instructors, teachers, park rangers, retired people, walk leaders, outdoor enthusiasts, complimentary therapists, fell runners, mountain leaders, orienteering coaches, career changers and people who just love Nordic Walking.
Why train with British Nordic Walking?
British Nordic Walking is the only UK member representative of the International Nordic Walking Federation (INWA). INWA is the governing body for Nordic Walking, and is the only international organisation authorised by the creators of Nordic Walking to promote, develop and safeguard the characteristics of Nordic Walking worldwide. The INWA method of teaching Nordic Walking is recognised internationally and is of the highest standard. This is the Ten Step Teaching Method™, and British Nordic Walking is the only organisation in the UK authorised to teach this method. Whilst Nordic Walking enhances the health and general fitness benefits of walking, the INWA technique retains the original elements of Nordic Walking which, when taught correctly, maximise those benefits in a way that many other techniques don’t.
All British Nordic Walking instructors are required to achieve these high standards, and having successfully completed a course become accredited INWA instructors with an internationally recognised qualification. Those who wish to consider adding exercise programmes to their walking instruction can study for a level 2 fitness qualification. Instructors passing this YMCA course will have both a UK recognised fitness qualification and be an accredited INWA instructor.
What are the benefits of being an accredited INWA instructor?
- Access to a vast range of knowledge and expertise both in the UK and in the twenty INWA member countries
- Access to INWA training courses
- Attendance at the INWA instructors’ convention held every year, where latest research information, teaching techniques and ideas are shared amongst instructors from around the world
- Access to scientific research which continues to demonstrate the health benefits of Nordic Walking
British Nordic Walking offers courses across the UK from our centres in England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales.
What do instructors say about our training?
“Learning the complete 10 Step Technique was important, especially steps 6-10 which take Nordic Walking to its full extent. Even as an experienced Nordic Walker it was good to get feedback on my technique.”
“This has been the most enjoyable course I have been on for many years. As a tutor, Catherine’s enthusiasm and expertise were an inspiration – she’s a fab instructor.”
“The course was very enjoyable – hard work but rewarding.”
"Just wanted to say how much I enjoyed the Instructor Course this weekend and meeting everyone. I have come away feeling really inspired and had my first 'business' meeting (and obviously a walk) this morning, with a friend who qualified as an Instructor in July. Thank you very much for all your help and ideas."
