Nordic Walking as cancer recovery workout

Nordic Walking: Maxine’s Inspiring Path to Recovery Post-Breast Cancer

As we mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, we’re honoured to share the story of Maxine Robbins, a Nordic Walking Instructor and physiotherapist who has found hope and healing through Nordic Walking. Diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014, Maxine went through mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, which, although essential for her recovery, left her with lasting side effects. These included lymphoedema—a condition causing painful swelling due to lymph fluid build-up—and neuropathy, which caused nerve damage and discomfort in her feet. Like many women post-treatment, Maxine also faced a heightened risk of osteoporosis due to her medications.

Maxine was introduced to Nordic Walking by Instructor Sarah McCracken at an NHS event in 2023, and it soon became an integral part of her post-cancer recovery.  “Not only do I feel more toned, but my post-cancer fatigue has decreased significantly. ,” she shares. "I'm fitter than before! The motion of striking the poles and feet against the ground also helps reduce my risk of osteoporosis by building bone. Plus, my lymphoedema has improved so much that my nurse was thrilled to see both my arms are now the same size.”

Beyond the physical benefits, Maxine has found that Nordic Walking has been incredibly empowering. Ten years on, Maxine has been busy this year; raising over £1000 for various cancer charities, parkwalking weekly and then monthly with 5k Your Way - Move against Cancer and also taking part in the World Nordic Walking Championships in Lahti, Finland. She also found the time to train as a Nordic Walking Instructor as well! Inspirational!

For those managing the side effects of breast cancer treatment, Maxine’s advice is clear: ”Stay active if you can. Start slowly, but don’t underestimate your potential. Nordic Walking transformed my recovery journey, and it could make a powerful difference in yours too.”

Do you know someone who might benefit from Maxine’s story and the benefits of Nordic Walking? Please consider sharing this blog with them! Together, we can spread awareness and encourage healing through movement.
