Congratulations to Hatti Bell who has been given the Joan Alexander Award by Age UK Sutton for the work she does with their Nordic Walking group.
The Joan Alexander Award, named after one of Age UK Sutton’s founders, recognises exceptional contributions to making Sutton a more Age Friendly place.
Hatti has been volunteering with them for three years as a Nordic Walking instructor. Each week she takes Nordic Walkers through Manor Park, Sutton for an hour of walking, exercise and fun. Hatti is very passionate about Nordic Walking and says the following about the classes:
“The people I walk with really look forward to their weekly walking sessions. Not only does it keep them healthy and help them get fitter and stronger, but also boosts their wellbeing and mental health. For some, the groups are the only opportunity to meet and talk with other people, and they provided a great support network for many during lockdown. The benefits of walking and talking in the fresh air and all types of weather cannot be underestimated!”
After the theft of her car, containing all her teaching poles and other equipment, Hatti set a fund-raising target of £500 to replace the teaching poles. She met this target within just one day so raised the target to £1,000 to replace all the stolen equipment.
Hatti raised a further £600 for Age UK Sutton by making face masks during lockdown.
Age UK Sutton Nordic Walking say, “We would like to say a special thank you to this wonderful lady who has done so much for our charity and community. Without Hatti our Nordic Walking classes would not be the same”.
Well done, Hatti.
