The British Nordic Walking team delivered an incredible performance at the World Nordic Walking Championships in Lahti, Finland, from 13-15 September 2024. Competing against 23 countries, the 14-member British squad brought home an impressive 8 medals: 2 gold, 2 silver, and 4 bronze.
Eilidh Paterson was a standout, securing a bronze in the 5km, a silver in the 10km, and a gold in the half marathon. Her highland fling at the finish line added to the celebration! Richard Shawcross also made his mark, earning bronze in the M40 5km race, while Vicky Welsh battled fiercely to win bronze in the 10km.
In an inspiring moment, CEO Catherine Hughes won silver in the W55 category, while Chris Stanley (below left) completed her first race since being diagnosed with Parkinson's, showcasing true grit.
Despite grey skies and drizzle, the championships were a triumph of teamwork, determination, and international camaraderie. The team’s success reflects the growing popularity of Nordic walking in the UK, and they’re already looking forward to next year’s European Championships.
