Reesa Shiner

About Reesa...

I trained to be a Nordic walking Instructor with BNW in 2013 and since then, I estimate that I have taught 500 people to Nordic walk in Bedford and the surrounding area.

Unlike many of the other Instructors, I did not have a background in fitness and I have never tried cross country skiing (though it is definitely on my to do list). I came across Nordic walking when I was looking for a long-term solution for my back pain.

I booked onto a ReActive8 course run by the Bedford Borough Council and quite frankly this “intelligent” sport gave me my life back and I felt compelled to spread the word, so I trained as an Instructor.

Having the poles in my hands supported my back, this instantly improved my posture and allowed me to get some movement to return. Movement and mobilisation are the key to long-term back health and so this is an effective exercise for anyone with back issues.

This amazing activity, which seems so simple, is an effective way to get you back on your feet after injury or is just a powerful tool to add to your exercise routine, if you are already fit.

How do we run sessions for everyone? The answer is we work as a team. Some people like to stay in the parks so there are sessions which are park based so the UrbanAdventure caters for this. Others like different countryside walks and there are many RuralAdventure walks on offer. If it’s a workout walks you like, then these are typically held in the evening or a weekend.

We cover it all with a team of 8. Some people stick to one instructor or leader and others like to flit around more, taking advantage of a network of highly experienced leaders.  The leaders are British Nordic Walking trained and we are always looking for motivated people who love to help others to join the team.

The social side or Nordic Walking should not be overlooked. We come together for social gatherings which are not linked to the walking more are being added in 2019. We have a community post board in our regular newsletter where members of the groups can advertise their events. This may be a concert, a theatre trip, book club or a coffee morning. We understand that social connection is vitally important.
